When talking about visiting France, you would immediately relate to Paris and all the historical attractions. However, during the same period in the old time, many constructions have also took place in other places in France.

In another city, Nancy, a city located in central France, also had loads of historical marks. In 1983, the Place Stanislas and the surrounding architectural ensemble, the Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance, in Nancy, have been listed as a World Heritage Site on the list of UNESCO.

Overview of Place Stanislas

The Place Stanislas, also known locally as ‘the Place Stan’, is a massive square in Nancy, Lorraine, France. The square was originally part of a major urban plan initiated in the 17th century to connect the medieval old town of Nancy and the new town built. The current building located in the center of the square Hôtel de Ville and Hôtel du Gouvernement were the originally existing buildings when the square was built.

The Place Stanislas itself is 125 meters long and 106 meters wide. The whole square is paved with light ochre stones, with two lines of darker stones forming a diagonal cross.

The buildings around the square are:

  1. The City Hall of Nancy (Hôtel de Ville)
  2. The Opéra-Theâtre (formerly the bishop’s palace)
  3. Rhe Grand Hôtel (originally the Hôtel de la Reine)
  4. The West, the Fine Arts Museum (Musée des Beaux Arts
  5. Pavillon Jacquet
  6. Arc de Triomphe by Héré
