Bosphorus Bridge, Turkey, the Bridge that Links Europe and Asia

Bosphorus, is a 32km long strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, separating Europe from Asia. Formerly it was a river valley drowned by the sea at the end of the Tertiary period. Nowadays it is a very busy strait with daily ships and ferry traffic, as well as oil tankers and local fishing boats.

The meaning of Bosphorus is ‘Food of the Cow’ in Greek. Currently there are 2 magnificent toll bridges connecting the 2 sides of the strait, which is a must-see in Bosphorus.

The Bosphorus Bridge

The Bosphorus Bridge was built over the Bosphorus between Beylerbeyi and Ortaköy, was opened in 1973 and is 1074m long. The bridge was officially opened by President Fahri Korutürk during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

In the beginning, pedestrians are allowed to walk across the bridge and the elevators inside the bridge legs were open for public usage. However, after many suicide incidents took place on the bridge, the bridge was closed for pedestrians. Only on special occasions like the Istanbul Marathon Days would the bridge be opened again for walking.

In 1988, due to the high demand in using the Bosphorus Bridge to go across the strait, another bridge, called the Faith Sultan Mehmet Bridge, connecting Anadolu Hisari and Rumeli Hisari was opened.

A third bridge has been approved to built in order to leverage the traffic for the 2 existing bridges.

Seeing the bridge

The bridge connects Asia and Europe in just a few minutes. The best way to see the bridge is to take a ferry leaving regularly from the Galata bridge for Üsküdar and other points on the Asian shore.

Another ferry service is leaving from Eminönü (ferries dock at the Bogaz Iskelesi) on the peninsula of Istanbul to Anadolu Kavag? near the Black Sea, strolling through the Rumelian and Anatolian sides of the city. Privately owned ferries are also available between Üsküdar and Besiktas.

Of course you can drive through the bridge yourself and enjoy the spectacular view of Europe on one hand and Asia on the other.
