Cork, a Charming Irish City Waiting for you to explore
Located on the banks of River Lee in south of Ireland, Cork is the 2nd largest city in Ireland. It has the element of a metropolis and yet still has a lot of green areas very well preserved. Compare with Dublin, which is a more touristic place, you might actually be able to sense the local Irish culture even more in Cork.
To feel the local life, go to the city center of Cork. It is a small but very comprehensive place where local people would go shopping. Elizabeth Fort
Elizabeth Fort is a historical site which can give you a very good view overlooking the city. It is located in Barrack Street. Built in 1601 and served as the army base for the city, the fort was demolished in 1603 and replaced by a stronger fort in 1624.
Nowadays, the ‘Elizabeth Fort Market Festival’ takes place in the fort every Sunday, where you can find Irish crafts, fresh food and different types of entertainments.
You can also walk just a few minutes away from the Fort to visit the St Finbarr’s Cathedral, which is a 19th century Gothic building.
University College Cork
The university buildings in both Ireland and UK are very often very old buildings with a lot of precious architecture, the University College Cork is no exception. Part of the college is opened for public visit. Stroll through the greens across the various different architecture styles and feel the Irish breeze right in between historical premises.
The highlights inside the University are:
1. Boole Library
2. Honan Chapel: a limestone chapel where a lot of the university’s graduates got married.
3. Lewis Gluckman Gallery: a modern architecture which holds exhibitions of international art where lectures also taken place there. A café is located on the ground floor.
To get around in Cork:
Buses has a very good coverage of Cork from city center to suburb areas. Main streets like St Patrick’s street or Parnell Place are the handy places to find bus lines.
