The Hague, the Judicial Capital of the World.

The Hague (Den Haag or ‘s-Gravenhage in Dutch), is an international city located in the South of the Netherlands. It is known as the ‘Judicial Capital of the World’ worldwide, as many international court organizations are located within this city.

You will find the International Court of Justice, the controversial International Criminal Court as well as United Nations institutions. The Hague is also the official place where the queen lives.

Below are 2 major places in The Hague that is representable and you should definitely plan some time to visit.

Plein

Plein is literally a ‘square’, located in the center of the town. It is an elegant square with historical government buildings surrounding 3 sides. The last side of the square is lined up with numerous bars and cafes, where terrace would be extended to the square in summer time. Many political demonstrations also took place in ‘Plein’.

You can walk to Plein from Central Station of The Hague within 5 to 10 minutes, along Herengracht and Korte Poten.

 Binnenhof

Located right next to the Plein is ‘Binnenhof’. Literally meaning ‘Inner Court’, Binnenhof has been the seat of the government of the Netherlands and the Kingdom of the Netherlands since the 13th century.

Originally, Binnenhof is a castle surrounded by moats. Nowadays the moats have been filled and the Court Pond is the only water surrounding the government building. The architecture, including the courtyard of Binnenhof is still well kept in medieval style. The Knight’s Hall is kept with its originally appearance. You can join the guided tour and walk around this building where the Dutch Parliament uses.

Binnenhof is located northwest of the Plein. You can walk there from Plein in 10-15 minutes, or you can take train to Spui Stadhuis or tram to Spui.

After a city walk, if you want to feel the North Sea sea breeze, you can get to the popular Scheveningen beach in The Hague, where loads of nice beach cafes and restaurants are available.
