The Old City of Bern, Switzerland (Part 1)



One of the most charming old city in Switzerland is this old cities of Bern.

This medieval city old city center of Bern owns many historical buildings and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Many of the landmarks are also designated as Swiss Cultural Properties of National Significance.

Also known as ‘Berne’, Bern is situated on a narrow hill surrounded on 3 sides by the Aare River. The current landscape is still more or less the same as those constructed during 12th to 15 th century. Bern also features  miles of arcaded walkways through streets lined-up with fountains and clock-towers.

Münster (Cathedral) of Bern 

The Cathedral is the tallest Cathedral in Switzerland, which is around 100m high. At the same time, the Cathedral also owns the biggest bell in Switzerland in its own bell tower. The bell was cast in 1611 and is still ringing daily until now.

Besides the magnificence of the cathedral, the cathedral also comprises of a rare collection of Gothic sculptures, stained glass windows produced around 1441-1450 and a terrace which is a rich archeological site.

Zytglogge

Zytglogge is a medieval clock tower existed in Bern as the landmark since 1220, which makes it one of the oldest clock tower in Switzerland. Zytglogge is literally ‘time bell’ translated from Bernese German.

Zytglogge has been extended and refurnished several time throughout its times, however the original design is still well-preserved.

Parliament buildings 

Built along the southern tip of the peninsula, straddles the location of the former Käfigturm wall is the current Parliament buildings.

The first part of the complex was built in 1852, known as the Bundeshaus West, while the central Parliament Building and Bundeshaus East are started to be built in 1894 and 1884 respectively.

38 Swiss artists has contributed to the interior of the central Parliament Building, which is topped with several large copper domes. The design of the central plaza has received 2 international awards.
