Beautiful Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is the most southern of the Ionian Islands along the West coast of Greece. With its 406 km2 of impressive landscape, Zakynthos goes beyond the traditional historical high lights of which Greece is known for. Mother Nature has been extremely generous by providing the island magnificent gold sand beaches, pine tree covered mountains, and silver white rocket coast formations surrounded with deep azure colored waters, bBut also mankind added to this rich palette of landscapes, such as olive and almond tree yards.

Zakynthos has its own international airport, close to the main capital of the island called Zakynthos City, from where a decent road network spreads out over the island, making it perfect to explore the island by car or motor cycle.

Each area of Zante is worth visiting. Just east of the city, a Venetian Castle is built on a hill and offers you an astonishing sight on the city and the harbor. The main capitol offers you a wide range of shopping possibilities. From small shops with local products up to modern high end Italian fashion brands in convenient shopping malls.

 Laganas

The most crowded area of the island is around Laganas, as small touristic village South of Zakynthos City offering sandy beaches and great nightlife facilities, mostly attracting the younger tourists. Yet at the same time the beaches near Laganas are also visited by the Caretta sea turtles to lay their eggs during summer. Some parts of the beach are protected to ensure the fragile turtles can make their way to the sea, once born from the eggs.

One of the most photographed beaches in the world can be found on Zante’s Shipwreck beach. Protected by sky high white chalk rockets the ship found its last destination after a long life sailing the sea.

Inland Zante

Travelling inland surprises you with small romantic “sleeping” villages, where Greek tradition and hospitality go hand in hand with historic culture, such as the churches of Macherado and Aghia Mavra or the 14th century monastery of Anafonitra. A Venetian tower and churches beautifully decorated with fresco’s can be found near Volimes in the north part of the island.

Spending a good time in Zante wouldn’t be complete without dining out in one of the many lovely taverns and restaurants. Whether it’s at the beach or on a small village square, enjoying the local Greek food and drinks in a picturesque setting will bring anyone in the mood for romance.
